We are the skeleton of the robot. We create the foundation that everything builds on.
We are in charge of designing a frame and managing the ballast of the robot. The frame dimensions and weight are based on MATE scoring requirements and the amount of space needed to house all of the components of the ROV.
We decided on aluminum angle iron to construct the frame. Aluminum is a good structural material that is lightweight, can be welded, and machined.
Using the past welding experience of our team members, we chose to weld the frame together.
From our knowledge, the most hydrodynamic shape is a sphere. Since a spherical frame would be too dificult to fabricate cheaply, we decided to make the frame cubed.
Lastly, we manage the ballast of the robot as it is being designed. The positive ballast is provided by the Circuits Enclosures.
